Place the feeder about 10-15 feet from a tree or bush so birds can easily retreat to safety if a hawk or other winged predator gets too close. Invest in multiple feeders with different types of food to tempt a variety of bird species. It may take time for birds to discover this new source of sustenance. If after 1 to 2 weeks, you havent received any visitors, sprinkle seeds on the ground to help them find the feeder. Twice a month, flush with hot water and dry before refilling. For a more thorough monthly cleaning, soak the feeder in a mixture of a quarter cup of white vinegar and 1 gallon of water, then clean with a bottle brush. Rinse with fresh water before refilling. Clean more frequently during hot, damp periods. Remove waste food and droppings from the surrounding area. Use a broom, shovel, or even a wet and dry vacuum to clean.
